Like a bridge between past and present, augmented reality technology is bringing to life the history of gastronomy at France's Château de Chantilly. Offering an experience that's as unusual as it is unique, the famous château recreates a 19th-century banquet, thanks to the work of a talented chef who featured on the French version of the "Top Chef" TV show.
A new experience awaits visitors to the Château de Chantilly, located about 50 kilometers north of Paris. It draws on augmented reality to transport visitors to the table of the Duke of Aumale, the last person to live in this historic château. Whether it's eggs in jelly, red mullet à la Russe, quail fillets, peas or rum baba, the dishes are enough to make your mouth water, but they aren't real! In fact, you'll be transported back to the 19th century to relive a regal banquet in virtual form.
Head for the Galerie des Cerfs to get up close to a table unlike any other. Smartphone in hand, the furnishings help bridge the gap between the past and the present. Upon arrival, you'll find that the table is set, and all that's missing are the guests! All you have to do is pass your cellphone over the plates to discover their contents. It's a visual experience that's a feast for the eyes, and a tempting one at that, thanks to a partnership between the historic building and Snapchat's augmented reality studio.
Before technology could be used to serve up this virtual banquet, it was necessary to recreate all of these emblematic dishes once served at a château that is intimately linked to the history of French cuisine. It was here, in fact, that the famous maître d'hôtel François Vatel committed suicide due to a delay in the delivery of an extravagant banquet ordered for Louis XIV's table.
As such, this unique experience was made possible thanks to the work of a talented chef who featured on the French edition of the TV cookery contest, "Top Chef." Clément Vergeat, who helms the Parisian restaurant Tracé, recreated all the dishes on the menu in real life, so that every aspect of the dish could be photographed to recreate a comprehensive image for the augmented reality experience.
