Three in ten Americans use Facebook to keep up with the news. Meta's social network remains the most widely used in this field among US adults. However, users have turned away in recent years, at least when it comes to getting news. Conversely, TikTok users are increasingly using the Chinese platform to access news-related content.

While more and more young people are turning to social networks to reconnect with the news, some platforms are more popular than others when it comes to this kind of use. Data in the latest report from the Pew Research Center demonstrates Facebook's success as the number one source of news consumption. In fact, 30% of American adults surveyed cited Mark Zuckerberg's social network as the top platform they regularly go to for news, followed by YouTube for 26% and Instagram for 16%.

The study also looked at the proportion of each platform's users regularly getting news on the site. "Some social media sites -- despite having relatively small overall audiences -- stand out for having high shares of users who regularly go to the site for news," explains the report. Such is the case with X. More than half of its users (53%) go there for news and information. However, there has been a downturn, with 59% of users reporting doing so in 2020. Facebook is also in decline, with 43% of its users consuming news content, compared with 54% three years earlier. Conversely, interest in this field among TikTok users is on the rise, since 43% of its users get news there, up from 22% in 2020.

Note that women make up a greater portion of regular news consumers on Nextdoor (66%), Facebook (62%), Instagram (59%) and TikTok (58%), while men prefer Reddit (67%), X (62%) and YouTube (58%).

Young people between 18 and 29 are more present on Reddit, accounting for 48% of its regular news consumers, followed by TikTok (44%) and Instagram (42%). The 30-to-49 age group accounts for 40% of Reddit and Facebook regular news consumers, and 38% of those on YouTube, X, Instagram and TikTok. Meanwhile, the over-50s are most fond of Nextdoor, a social network for neighbors, when it comes to getting news.
