How to choose a scooter helmet

by ETX

Choosing the right helmet will prove vital if you ever have a crash or a fall. Photography Andrey_Popov / Shutterstock©  Whether riding a kick scooter, a bicycle or a motorcycle, choosing a helmet is an important process. Even if they're not always compulsory, helmets are an essential safety measure.

Since there are no specific helmets for scooter riders, it's advisable to choose from the existing offer for cyclists or motorcyclists. For riding in the city, it's best to choose a light and breathable bicycle helmet. If you're used to riding on faster roads, it's better to choose a jet-style or full-face helmet, usually for motorcyclists. In general, you should tailor your level of protection to your speed.

Bike helmets have the advantage of being compact, light and easy to carry. Some are even foldable, which greatly simplifies their use. However, they mainly protect against small shocks, at low speeds. An interesting alternative is the snowboard helmet, which is thicker and covers more of the head and ears, which is not unwelcome when it's cold or raining. A motorcycle helmet is better suited to those who are used to riding at more than 25 km/h. In case of a fall or a crash, these riders will need to have their whole head perfectly protected.

Once the type of helmet is chosen, it's important to choose the right size. If it is too big, a helmet can be totally ineffective. In order to avoid making a mistake, you should measure your head size, above the eyebrows.

Note that there are also light systems that can be attached to the back of a helmet, allowing, for example, riders to warn other users when they're braking or changing direction.

It is strongly advised to change a helmet after the slightest impact. Otherwise, it should generally be renewed every five years.

Although it is not mandatory, it is also advisable to wear reflective clothing or equipment when riding in the dark or at night, so that you can be seen by other road users. Ideally, your scooter should be equipped with a braking system, a horn, lights (front and rear), and rear and side reflectors.

This practical solution makes sure your bike or scooter helmet is always on hand
