K-pop sensation BTS failed to take home an award at the 65th Grammy Awards held on Feb. 5 at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles.
The boy band did not attend this year's ceremony.
Last November, the group of seven scored three Grammy nominations. It was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for “My Universe,” a collaborative track with British rock band Coldplay released in 2021. It marked BTS’s third consecutive nomination for the category.
BTS was also nominated for Best Music Video with “Yet to Come,” the lead track of its 2022 anthology album “Proof.” It was nominated for Album of the Year as well, as featured artists on Coldplay’s album “Music of the Spheres” (2021) which contains “My Universe.”
BTS members J-Hope, RM and Suga are credited as songwriters on “Music of the Spheres” under their real names: Jung Ho-seok, Kim Nam-joon and Min Yoon-gi.
Other contenders in the Best Pop Duo/Group Performance category were “Don’t Shut Me Down” by ABBA, “Bam Bam” by Camilla Cabello featuring Ed Sheeran, “I Like You (A Happier Song)” by Post Malone and Doja Cat and “Unholy” by Sam Smith and Kim Petras. Smith and Petras received the award.
For Best Music Video, BTS contended with Adele’s “Easy On Me,” Doja Cat’s “Woman,” Kendrick Lamar’s “The Heart Part 5,” Harry Styles’ “As It Was” and Taylor Swift’s “All Too Well: The Short Film.” Swift won the category.
For Album of the Year, “Voyage” by ABBA, “30” by Adele, “Un Verano Sin Ti” by Bad Bunny, “Renaissance” by Beyoncé, “Good Morning Gorgeous (Deluxe)” by Mary J. Blige, “In These Silent Days” by Brandi Carlie, “Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers” by Kendrick Lamar, “Special” by Lizzo and “Harry’s House” by Harry Styles were also nominated. Styles took home the award.
This year marked the first time BTS scored more than one Grammy nomination.
In the past two Grammy Awards, BTS was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance for their English-lyric megahit “Dynamite” (2020) and “Butter” (2021).
Although BTS failed to take home an award, it is the only artist to receive nominations three years in a row for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance, a category created in 2011.
“My Universe” is the second time a collaborative track by two different groups was nominated for Best Pop Duo/Group Performance. The first time was also by Coldplay, for its 2017 song “Something Just Like This” in collaboration with American electronic DJ duo The Chainsmokers.
Record of the Year went to "About Damn Time" by Lizzo, and Song of the Year to "Just Like That" by Bonnie Raitt. Pop star Beyoncé made history by winning four awards and reaching her 32nd Grammy in her career, the most received by any artist.
