Are you going vegan this January? Check out these popular spots and limited-time promotions for plant-based, dairy-free feasts.
Since it first started in 2014, thousands of people across the globe have been hopping onto the Veganuary movement, cutting out all animal products from their diet for the first month of the year, with numbers doubling every year.
Veganuary's increasing popularity has encouraged restaurants across Dubai to come up with special menus, promotions and dishes that tantalise. Whether you are trying the trend for the first time or have already been following a plant-based diet, these delicious choices will definitely add flavour to your culinary adventures in the city.
Dive into sustainable dining
Since Atlantis, The Palm began working with local farmers and ingredients to reduce overall carbon footprint, there have been plenty of creative vegan options at the resort's eateries. Now they have upped the ante with special Veganuary menus at select restaurants showcasing the team's skills. Try tempting South American treats at En Fuego and bites like Impossible nachos at Warehouse. Or sink your teeth into vegan twists on British favourites such as beetroot Wellington or grilled cauliflower steak with chimichurri at Gordon Ramsay's Bread Street Kitchen. Even affirmed carnivores will be impressed!
Dine at the best plant-based cafes in the city
Dubai has a host of established eateries like Wabi Sabi, Comptoir 102, Soul Sante and Joe and The Juice that serve scrumptious vegan and vegetarian fare all year round. Relax amid the greenery at SEVA Table while relishing the exclusively plant-based treats – the decadent 'Snickers' pie will have you coming back for more.
Fancy a luxurious lunch? Then alfresco Folia by chef Matthew Kenney at the Four Seasons in Jumeirah is the perfect spot for you. Kick things off with their detox salad before tucking into hot crispy mushroom sliders and finish off with a chocolate orange tart.
Spice up your life with vegan delights
Those looking for punchy flavours can opt for Asian vegan fare. Taste innovative plates like kimchi tempeh tacos, avocado maki and Vietnamese spring rolls while you take in the stunning views at Aura Skypool Lounge, or book their exclusive Veganuary tasting menu which is on offer from 1pm till 3pm daily (AED350 per person). Newcomer Honeycomb Hi-Fi is also embracing the movement by highlighting its Japanese inspired concoctions like Binchotan grilled okra and basil shiso miso eggplant.
Opt in for Chinese cuisine with Cantonese heavy-hitter Hutong’s plant-based curations like their famous wild mushroom and truffle bao bun and the Black Diamond — a portion of deep-fried charcoal tofu, generously tossed with spiced salts. Meanwhile, Caribbean cravings will be satiated at Miss Lily's which is celebrating exotic plant-based dishes. Tuck into chef Richie Richards' corn fritters, vegetable coconut curry and Schewan tofu and then cool down with vegan ice cream.
Don't miss out on Farzi Cafe's modern Indian gastronomy either. Desi Chowmein noodles, pecan-topped mango and kale salad plus Kerala 'Calamari' with bitter gourd as the star ingredient
Try vegan versions of your favourite breakfast eats
Breakfast fans can jump on the vegan bandwagon with so many restaurants around the city offering a variety of meat and dairy-free options this month. Kickstart your morning with a flavourful Pitaya Bowl and a plant-based Breakfast Skillet at The Courtyard's picturesque eatery Cassette, or savour a fluffy coconut almond pancake at DIFC's LDC Kitchen + Coffee. Those in The Sustainable City should stop by Spill the Bean for vegan coconut French toast.
You can also make your way to Le Meridien Mina Seyahi's Instagram-approved hotspot Bounty Beets for hip vibes and bites of their vegetarian specials like chickpea omelettes, tofu and mushroom scramble and a ‘vurger’ – a meat-free burger – served on homemade bread.
Devour new plant-based burgers in Dubai
Dubai is known for its elevated burger spots and, this month, well-known names have come up with an array of plant-based options. Pickl's Impossible burger can easily be transformed into a vegan offering, while Common Grounds has perfected its avocado and chickpea patty, topping it with vegan mayo. But if you're truly committed, you'll make your way to Dubai Mall to dine at Vegan Burger, which also serves hot dogs, nuggets, milkshakes and more.
Black Tap's commitment to Veganuary continues with two new vegan options – their truffle Shroom burger and rice noodle Canal Street chopped salad. Plus vegans get to indulge in CrazyShakes too thanks to the American spot's collaboration with dairy-free Enjoy Trill. The strawberry Pink Parade and chocolate Choco Loco are sure to light up your social media feed, with the latter coming topped with a doughnut.
