Jiuzhaigou Travel Guide from Chengdu: Transport, Tickets and Must-See Spots

by Travie

Plan your Jiuzhaigou trip from Chengdu with this complete guide—covering high-speed train routes, ticket booking, shuttle systems, and must-see spots like Five Flower Lake and Pearl Shoal Waterfall.

There’s a saying in China: “After seeing the waters of Jiuzhaigou, no other waters will do.”

It may sound like exaggeration—until you arrive.

Set high in the mountains of Sichuan at elevations between 2,000 and 3,000 meters, Jiuzhaigou unfolds like something out of a dream. A mosaic of 108 lakes, waterfalls and forested valleys shifts in color with the seasons—emerald, sapphire, jade—constantly changing with light and weather.

For many travelers, it’s the defining highlight of a journey to Chengdu—and a place that feels almost unreal.

Here’s how to experience it well, and without unnecessary stress.

Getting There: From Chengdu to Jiuzhaigou
The journey begins in Chengdu.

The most efficient way to reach Jiuzhaigou is by high-speed train from Chengdu Railway Station to Huanglongjiuzhai Railway Station.

• Travel time: Approximately 2 to 2.5 hours

From the station, however, the journey is not yet complete. Jiuzhaigou Scenic Area lies another 1.5 to 2 hours away, making shuttle transportation essential.

▷Shuttle Tips

Pre-booking a shuttle bus through platforms like Trip.com is highly recommended.

Cost: KRW 10,000–30,000 (depending on comfort level)Frequent departures throughout the day

Station → Scenic Area → Hotel

One major advantage: luggage can often remain on the bus, allowing for a more relaxed transfer.

Pick-up and drop-off details are typically sent via message the day before departure.

Tickets: What You Need to Know

Jiuzhaigou strictly limits daily visitors to 41,000 people to protect its fragile ecosystem. There are no on-site ticket sales—all entries must be reserved in advance.
How to Book
Tickets can be purchased via:

• Official WeChat mini-program (Aba Tourism)
• Global platforms such as Trip.com

Ticket TypesPricing varies by season and age:

• Peak season (Apr–Nov): 190 RMB (adult)
• Off-season (Dec–Mar): 80 RMB
• Shuttle bus (mandatory):Peak: 90 RMBOff-season: 80 RMB

Foreign travelers must:
• Enter passport details accurately
• Bring a physical passport for entry verification

During peak seasons, tickets sell out quickly—early booking is essential.

Inside Jiuzhaigou: How to Get Around

Jiuzhaigou is vast—stretching across a Y-shaped valley system spanning roughly 50 kilometers. Walking alone is not practical.

The Shuttle System
Park shuttle buses are the key to efficient exploration.

Routes begin at the entrance and pass through the central hub at Nuorilang Center, branching into:
• Zechawa Valley (left branch)
• Rize Valley (right branch)

Visitors are typically assigned routes randomly upon boarding.

The Smart Way to Explore
• Take the shuttle to the top of your assigned valley
• Explore downward on foot
• Re-board buses along the way

Stops are frequent, but not all allow both boarding and drop-off—check signage carefully.

Five Flower Lake (Wuhua Hai)

Among Jiuzhaigou’s many lakes, Five Flower Lake stands apart. Its name—“Lake of Five Flowers”—hints at its extraordinary palette. Submerged tree trunks, aquatic plants and mineral deposits refract light into an ever-shifting spectrum of colors.

Despite its depth, the water is so clear that the lakebed remains visible. In autumn, when foliage reflects on the surface, the effect is almost overwhelming.
A Lake of LegendsPanda Lake (Xiongmao Hai)

Located above Five Flower Lake, Panda Lake takes its name from a local legend that wild pandas once came here to drink.

At 2,587 meters above sea level, the lake is known for its clarity and mirror-like reflections.

Surrounding cliffs and dense forests create perfect symmetry on the water’s surface—like a natural ink painting.
In winter, the lake freezes into a crystalline landscape, while nearby waterfalls cascade in layered formations.

The Power of Water
Pearl Shoal Waterfall (Zhenzhutan Pubu)

Famous as the opening scene of the classic drama Journey to the West, Pearl Shoal Waterfall is one of Jiuzhaigou’s most dynamic sights.

Above the falls lies a broad limestone terrace where thin streams shimmer under sunlight—resembling countless rolling pearls.

These streams gather and plunge over a 21-meter drop, spreading across a width of 160 meters.

Walking along the viewing path, you can experience both the sweeping scale and the intricate details of the cascading water. The sound alone—deep, resonant, immersive—defines the moment.

A Journey Worth Taking Slowly

Jiuzhaigou is not just a destination. It’s a place that shifts with light, with weather, with time itself. The more slowly you move through it, the more it reveals.

Plan carefully. Travel smart. And once you arrive, let the landscape do the rest.

Because in Jiuzhaigou, the beauty isn’t just something you see. It’s something you absorb.
