Have you ever lost two games in a row in Marvel Rivals but then won one, just enough to keep you playing? Well, if this has happened to you too many times, you might be suspecting whether Marvel Rivals uses EOMM.
EOMM made a name for itself within the Marvel Rivals community as many players noticed strange matchmaking patterns, like winning several games in a row and then suddenly hitting a losing streak with unbalanced teams. Here's what EOMM means, how it allegedly works in Marvel Rivals, and what players are experiencing.
What does EOMM mean in Marvel Rivals?
EOMM stands for Engagement Optimized Matchmaking. It is a matchmaking system designed to maximize player retention rather than fairness. EOMM uses behavioral data while matching players, like win/loss history, playtime, and behavioral patterns.
In simple terms, if you're on a losing streak, EOMM may give you easier opponents and stronger teammates to prevent you from quitting. If you're winning too much, it may increase the difficulty by matching you versus better players or giving you worse teammates to keep you challenged. While it sounds clever at first, this results in inconsistent match difficulty.
EOMM focuses on maintaining your emotional engagement with the game, which can come at the expense of fair and competitive matches.
Does Marvel Rivals use EOMM?
Marvel Rivals has not officially confirmed the use of EOMM. However, there are strong indications that a system similar to EOMM is being used in the game.
The game's developer, NetEase, has previously used engagement-based matchmaking in other titles. Players report clear patterns such as forced win/loss streaks, inconsistent match difficulty, and unbalanced teams. Although there is no public documentation naming EOMM specifically in Marvel Rivals, the matchmaking behavior in the game already cast doubt into players' minds.
However, Marvel Rivals constantly gets updates, and patches bring in lots of changes alongside setbacks like error code 211 and the operation frequency error on rare occasions. These updates may eventually roll out tweaks to Marvel Rivals' matchmaking system if players continue to raise their concerns regarding the existing system in the game.
