Top 5 Games like League of Legends

by Inven Global

League of Legends is the go-to MOBA game for millions with its active competitive scene, iconic champions, and deep gameplay mechanics. However, not every player finds the experience satisfying, as many look for games like League of Legends.

There are several reasons why most dedicated fans might even explore alternatives to LoL. Toxicity in the in-game chat, looking to play even shorter matches, or the desire to try out different styles and gameplay experiences are all valid reasons to justify a switch.

As a long-time League player, there have been times when I've experienced burnout and just wanted to try something new. The following games are decent replacements for League of Legends. The learning curve for them will also be quite modest since your LoL skills will help you transition much faster.

1. Heroes of the Storm

Heroes of the Storm is quite similar to League of Legends with its 5v5 core gameplay features that revolve around innovative maps and lanes. The gameplay experience in HotS is more focused on team coordination and talent selection than farming all the time. This design simplifies the learning curve, and HotS is also known for having one of the chiller communities.

Toxicity in HotS is notably lower due to the lack of all-chat. Overall, I found HotS to be a refreshing change of pace from LoL. If you're thinking of a more permanent switch, you should be aware that the size of HotS' competitive scene could be considered nonexistent compared to LoL, since Blizzard doesn't support tournaments or leagues anymore.

2. Dota 2

Dota is the founding father of MOBA games, so not only is it like League of Legends, but LoL is actually based on Dota. Over time, the game evolved into Dota 2, and it's still a 5v5 experience with lanes, heroes, and strategic objectives. Considering I play both titles, I can say that they fulfill the same competitive itch. However, Dota 2 takes a more macro-focused and methodical approach.

Dota 2's pace is noticeably slower than that of the League, especially in the early game, while the matches can be noticeably longer, too. A League of Legends game generally lasts 25 to 34 minutes long, and you frequently stumble upon Dota 2 matches that go up to 40 minutes. The skill floor in Dota 2 is much higher, as the game also introduces mechanics like creep denying, which adds more depth to lane equilibrium control. I would say that Dota 2 is perfect for those looking for a more complex experience since you'll have a lot of studying to do even with a background in LoL.

3. League of Legends: Wild Rift

League of Legends: Wild https://i.ibb.co/XrKVnLmb/League-of-Legends-Wild-Rift.jpgRift is the mobile version of LoL and it was also developed by Riot Games. It's a natural League alternative with a similar core gameplay experience. It features the same champions and familiar mechanics, but with shorter matches.

I personally enjoy playing Wild Rift because of how approachable and less punishing it feels. The matches usually last around 15 to 20 minutes, and the community is notably less toxic. I find the game to be better for working adults, especially if they're fed up with the intensity of League's ranked queues. Wild Rift captures the essence of LoL in a more accessible and relaxed format. However, champions, like Mel, first released in League of Legends and generally found their way into Wild Rift much later.

4. Pokémon Unite

Pokémon Unite is a casual-friendly MOBA that also makes a decent League of Legends alternative. It's a more accessible take on the genre as it's much easier to learn with more relaxed matches. Unite is generally a decent pick for players who are also long-time Pokémon fans.

Pokémon Unite matches are fast-paced and usually wrap up in 10 minutes. The gameplay experience is more focused on action and teamfights. I find that the prioritization of teamfights often lowers the barrier for entry, so you can easily pick up the game if you're burnt out on League's intensity or just want a chill experience.

5. Mobile Legends: Bang Bang

Mobile Legends: Bang Bang is an extremely popular League of Legends alternative, especially in regions like Southeast Asia. It's a solid alternative to LoL, and the gameplay experience is fast-paced. Matches are 5v5 on a classic three-lane map with jungling, laning, and teamfights that will feel instantly familiar to LoL players.

Another similarity MLBB has to LoL is its competitive scene. The game has an esports ecosystem with major international events and sizable prize pools. MLBB can scratch the same competition that League does, but in a more accessible and time-efficient package.
