As of Tuesday, May 27, Meta has begun using the public data of its European users to train its artificial intelligence models. This includes their posts, photos, comments and interactions with Meta's AI assistants on Facebook, Instagram, Threads and WhatsApp. However, it is possible to opt out of this use of your personal data.
Meta wants to develop its generative AI tools and, to do so, needs you and your data. The company is therefore relying on content shared publicly by users of all its platforms (private messages are not included in this data collection). This approach is part of the company's drive to improve its services, but obviously also raises questions about privacy protection. However, it is possible to refuse to allow your data to be used to train Meta's AI. The opt-out procedure is relatively straightforward.
As a Facebook or Instagram user, you've probably already received an email alerting you to these new rules and the steps you need to take to opt out of allowing your data to be used. However, as the link to follow is not prominently displayed, it's safe to assume that the majority of recipients haven't paid much attention to it. So, if you don't want your posts on Facebook, Instagram or Threads to be fed to Meta's AI, you'll need to go to your application settings.
On Facebook, go to the “Privacy Center.” In the introductory text, click on “object” to access the form for objecting to Meta's use of your information for AI training. You can specify the reasons why you do not agree to share your data, but this is not compulsory. You will then receive an email confirming your opposition to the use of your public information to improve Meta's generative AI.
On Instagram, the procedure is identical. Here too, go to your settings and then to the “Privacy Center,” where you can again click on “object” to protect your data. In turn, this will also protect your data on Threads.
That leaves WhatsApp, where only your conversations with Meta's AI are concerned. It is therefore advisable to refrain from using this tool if you do not wish to participate directly in its development.
