One constant within the two historical LCK winning streaks: Faker

by Inven Global

Last Saturday, T1 rewrote history, again. Seven years ago, SK Telecom T1 recorded a 23-match winning streak, which was the longest in LCK history, but T1 successfully managed to break their own record in 2022 — by winning 24 straight matches.

Over the years, many things have changed — even the team was rebranded to T1, but one thing has been a constant over the many years: the one and only GOAT of League, Lee “Faker” Sang-hyeok.

The SK Telecom T1 of 2015 that went on the 23-match winning streak was amazing. They won two consecutive seasons, as well as taking a Worlds title. At the time, their roster was stacked with legendary players such as Jang “MaRin” Gyeong-hwan, Bae “Bengi” Sung-woong, Faker, Bae “Bang” Jun-sik, and Lee “Wolf” Jae-wan, not to mention their sixth man, Lee “Easyhoon” Ji-hoon, who did his role better than any other substitute League has seen.

Since then, their record-setting 23-match winning streak has remained unchallenged for seven years, until now. Faker was just a star prospect back then, but today he’s the veteran of veterans, star of stars, and the man most would pick as the greatest League of Legends player to venture onto the server. This season Faker led players as young as he was back in then to another marvelous run as T1 went through the spring split undefeated and continued to win in the summer season, breaking how own record in the process.

One of the key reasons Faker is respected so universally is his unwavering consistency. For ten years since his debut back in 2013, Faker has been competing with the best players around the world — in fact all of the players he started competing with in the LCK are retired, but Faker is still active, and still writing new chapters in his personal history, adding to his own legend.

In his interview after breaking his own win streak record, Faker revealed his secret behind maintaining such high-level gameplay for so long. "Nowadays, I spend every single hour of my time researching the game," said Faker. Just like the young Faker of 2013, his mind is only on League of Legends.

T1’s streak hasn’t yet stopped. This week, they will take on Kwangdong Freecs and DRX and aim to extend their record — at this pace, it's hard to see who might stop this juggernaut of a team,
